Midnight Sun Theatre Presents…

About the Show

Tick, Tick… Boom!
by Jonathan Larson

Before Rent, there was Tick, Tick… Boom!. This autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning composer of Rent, is the story of a composer and the sacrifices that he made to achieve his big break in theatre. Containing fourteen songs, ten characters, and three amazing actors, Tick, Tick… Boom! takes you on the playwright/composer’s journey that led to a Broadway blockbuster.

TTB follows one day in the life of Jonathan Larson, the day he turns 30. It’s a landmark birthday. But does it signal the end of a budding Musical Theatre career with the flop of “Superbia”? Or the start of something big?

Jonathan Larson is the author, composer and lyricist of this fantastic examination of a day in the life of the man who would go on to write “Rent.” It was written and first performed just one year after TTB is set. The original “rock monologue” was expanded by David Auburn (author of MST’s next season offering “Proof”) to bring us the “Tick, Tick.. Boom!” you will see before you.

Larson would go on to write the award winning blockbuster “Rent” (which he was actually working on as tonight’s story was happening.) But the young composer never got to see the realization of his dream. He passed away the very day of Rent’s preview performance. Four month’s later, Rent hit Broadway and became the 12th longest running show of all time. Rent would go on to win multiple Drama Desk awards, the New York Drama Critic’s Circle award, three Tony awards and the Pulitzer Prize.
